Home beyond Home: Southwark Day Centre for Asylum Seekers

(他鄉作故鄉:倫敦南華克區尋求庇護者日照中心)

Abstract

The study aimed at seeking the notions as well as the meanings of ‘home’ to the asylum seekers and refugees through the Southwark Day Center for Asylum Seekers (SDCAS), a non-religious charity with a mission to support, promote and secure the rights of those whom were forced to leave their native places, suffered deep sorrow, and finally became the foreign Otherness while still being in a condition of unsteady with their undefined status in the contexts of London.

The primary research questions were as follows: In the first instance, how SDCAS made good use of three church spaces in existence as their Centres, and what were the essential factors in turning the heritage into welcome places for asylum seekers and refugees, which was based on the actual visits and the reports with interviews previously done by other scholars. Secondly, through the image of homes in the drawings from the art session created by the asylum seekers and refugees, the study also attempted to link up London with other countries and regions, and to re-examine whether London is certainly a multi-cultural city or not.

Keywords: Heritage, Home, Multi-cultural City, Southwark Day Centre for Asylum Seekers (SDCAS), and Sense of belonging.
